As the Giants' roster stands now, 29 players are eligible for the Practice Squad

Here are the 29 players on the team who are eligible for the Practice Squad in 2013:

This list includes all 7 Giants draft picks from this past April's draft (names in bold print). It also includes 8 Undrafted Rookie Free Agents (UDFAs) as well; they are the players in highlighted in blue print. 5 of these (Clement, James, Mertile, Sabino, and Tweedy) were already signed going into training camp. 3 more were picked up in recent days (Harris, Sinkfield, & Holtz). The remaining 14 are guys who have already had shots in the NFL, but who have been unable to accrue a full season in the NFL yet. If they had, then they wouldn't be eligible for the Practice Squad. Check out the rules from this great link by Brian McFarland from last year on who is eligible for the Practice Squad:
This article clears everything up if you have any questions. The only player whose practice squad eligibility that I struggled to identify was that of Selvish Capers. He's already spent 3 seasons on the "Taxi Squad": one with Washington in 2010 (just 3 games, but that's all that's needed to count as a year on a team's Practice Squad in the NFL), and the last two seasons with the Giants. The maximum number of years that a player can be on a team's Practice Squad is 3, which is how many Capers has already spent. As a result, Capers is no longer Practice Squad eligible. It's basically time for him to crap, or get off of the bowl, to use some nasty bathroom humor.

For a link to the CBA describing the Practice Squad eligibility click HERE and go to Article 33, Section 4. For convenience's sake, here it is below:

The only draft pick from this past April's draft who seems like he's destined for the Practice Squad is their first 7th round pick, OG Eric Herman (assuming he clears waivers if he's waived of course; he would have to be signed to a club's 53-man roster, which seems unlikely considering his uneven performance thus far in training camp and preseason). The other 6 draft picks all look to have secured spots on the team. Only 5th round pick, S Cooper Taylor stands a chance of getting placed on Injured Reserve. The 8 UDFAs on the 90-man roster now are all ideal candidates for the Practice Squad as well.

This leaves 15 other players who have failed to accrue an NFL season yet, who are no longer rookies, thereby making them eligible for the practice squad this year again. There are seven players who spent time on the Practice Squad last year that are on this linked list who are eligible to be on it again this year (not all though of course: Capers is not eligible, David Douglas was signed off of last year's Practice Squad to Tampa Bay's active 53-man roster, and Craig Marshall is no longer with the club), if they are waived and not picked up by anyone. They are as follows (Click on each player's name below for background information on each player w/respect to their Practice Squad history, & their recent history):
All 7 of these players who were on the Practice Squad last year, and who are still eligible to be in it again this year, were UDFAs a year ago. The other 7 players who are still Practice Squad eligible, and who were not on the Giants' practice squad last year are as follows (Once again, click on each player's name below for background information on each player w/respect to their Practice Squad history, & their recent history)::
These 7 players mentioned immediately above either had a cup of coffee with the Giants last year at some point (Muasau & Talley), played elsewhere, or were outside of football for a spell.

Updated Giants 90-man roster with corresponding 2013 cap number for each player (latest 53-man roster prediction coming up tomorrow)

Let me start off by stating that I intended to post my latest 53-man roster prediction today (my 5th to be exact), but I'm feeling a bit under the weather. I'll save that for tomorrow. My sixth and final last prediction will be one week from tomorrow.

Here is the latest 90-man roster for the Giants with the corresponding cap number for each player. There are a few additions since the I last posted this (Ben Guidugli, Austin Holtz, Marcus Harris, & Terrell Sinkfield). There are also a few deletions as well (Jeremy Horne, Kris Adams, Chris DeGeare, & Keith Carlos). These are the Top 51:

*****

Now here is an approximation for the salary cap breakdown using the Top 51 rules. The Giants are on record as being $2,650,728 under cap according to the NFLPA's Top 51 League cap report website, so the end result is accurate. What is approximated in this instance is the Net Cap Adjustment figure from 2012 that is factored into this year's team salary cap equation as well as the Dead Money amount (I'll list this amount again this weekend).

*****

Now here are the remaining 39 players on the roster--those ranked 52nd to 90th in cap number on the roster--who do not count against the cap as of yet. Once September 5th comes around though, the accounting rules for the salary cap will change. The Top 51 rule will no longer be in effect.

Once the Top 51 Rule is no longer in effect, players who receive Injury Settlements during training camp and preseason will count against the cap. In addition, players who go on IR will count, as will all all players on the 53-man roster to start the season (that's two more player than those on the Top 51 list) as well as those on the PUP List to start the year (currently the Giants have only Markus Kuhn and JPP on that list with JPP looking like hes close to being ready to come off it).

Practice Squad players--all 8--will count against the cap as well at a 2013 rate of at least $6,000 per week per player ($102,000 per season over the course of all 17 weeks at minimum). Teams can choose to pay their practice squad players more if they so choose. Teams like the Patriots have done it in the past. Look at what they did last season in this regard in the link below when they had the highest paid practice squad in the entire league:

Salary Cap update for all 32 teams as of today (August 18th)

Here are the latest figures for all clubs throughout the league courtesy of the NFLPA's Top 51 League Cap Report website.

I. Here are the figures in order of most cap space to least cap space first:

II. Here are the cap figures listed above in Alphabetical order for the sake of reference:

*****

  • If you would like to compare the figures listed to today to those which I posted two weeks ago for each club on Sunday, August 4th, then simply click HERE to do so.
  • After you do that, take a look at the teams in the NFC East.
  • The Giants have $2,650,728 in cap room as of now, making them one of the "almost running on empty teams" that I listed below.
  • The Eagles (ranking 4th in the league) and Cowboys (ranked 12th) are in solid shape to start the regular season, while the Giants (who are ranked 27th) are on the border of having to make some financial moves to be able to have some breathing room under the cap.
  • The Redskins (who rank 28th) definitely have to make a move or two with respect to the restructuring a contract or two in order to be able to operate in the regular season as well once the Top 51 Rule expires 18 days from now on Thursday, September 5th at 12:00 am New York time.
  • To make an automotive parallel, generally speaking, teams with less than $3 million worth of cap room are basically almost running on empty.
  • Right now, according to this list, there are six clubs who fit into this category: the Giants, Redskins, Bears, Texans, Rams, & Chiefs.
  • These 6 clubs, and possibly two of the clubs slightly ahead of them (the Seahawks & Chargers), will have to make some extra room under the cap in order to cover regular season operational expenses which are not included now, but will be factored in to the salary cap equation once the Top 51 rule expires in slightly less than 18 days.
    • These factors include room for players on Injured Reserve.
    • players who have received Injury Settlements.
    • additional dead money as the result of players who are cut to reach the 53-man roster limit.
    • the 8 players on the Practice Squad ($6,000 a week x 17 weeks x 8 players At MINIMUM)
    • and of course all 53 players on the 53-man roster; right now only the top 51 players on the roster count (this will add two extra salaries to the equation).
  • Keep in mind that the roster moves that teams make going forward when the upcoming rounds of player cuts take place---the cut-down to 75 on August 27th, & the final cut-down to the final 53 on August 31st---will also factor in each individual club's cap situation.
  • If say for example the Chiefs, who have the least amount of cap space in the league, have a player who has a higher cap number than a similarly ranked player, but is better than him, he'll very likely be the one to get released due to the club's tight cap situation.
  • Keep your eyes out for situations like this around the league, particularly from the 8 clubs mentioned above, as we near the end of training camps throughout the league this coming week.

What effect will Rueben Randle's performance in 2013 have on what the Giants decide to do with Hakeem Nicks after the 2013 season?

Pay attention to what Randle does this season because it'll directly affect what the Giants decide to do with Nicks. Besides Nicks's injury situation, this is the other big variable that the Giants will take into consideration with respect to what they decide to do with Nicks after the season (e.g., whether they let Nicks walk in FA, franchise him for the year, franchise him then extend him, come to long-term contract terms prior to the start of free agency, or if they just let him walk outright in free agency).

Looking at the situation analytically from a pure salary cap perspective, I contend that Nicks will be here with the Giants in 2014, since I believe that the Giants will franchise him, and not even let him get to unrestricted free agency if they can't come to a long-term agreement with him prior to it's start (as they did with Will Beatty this year). They will have room enough under the cap next year to use on him. As per overthecap.com, the Giants have an estimated $113,040,042 committed to their active salary in 2014. If, for any reason, negotiations get hairy, they then can use the franchise tag on Nicks.

As can be seen above, the franchise tag number for the 2013 season for WRs is $10,537,000. It will inevitably increase somewhat next year, as salaries continue to escalate, while incidentally the salary cap remains static. Keep an eye on Nicks' health, and Randle's progress in the offense, as they will be inextricably linked from a cap standpoint to what the Giants decide to do regarding Nicks' long-term future with the franchise. This is just a hunch, but all things being equal (assuming Randle plays well, and shows #1 ability, while Nicks is healthy--a BIG if) I think that they Giants will franchise Nicks after the year, and then draft someone else to develop as a 4th WR for the year, and then let Nicks walk after the 2014 season. They will also have to take into account JPP's impending free agency into the equation as well. You can bet that Eli Manning will agree to an extension next year that will lessen his 2014 cap number a great deal, thereby giving the Giants some more much needed cap room going forward into next year and beyond.

This is just total speculation on my part, as I said, but I can easily see a scenario that unfolds in that way. It will depend on how Nicks's season goes health-wise. If he's healthy, he's going to command huge bucks out on the open market from teams all over the league. He's proven that he's a #1 receiver playing the Z position. The question is this: can he remain healthy over the course of a 16-game season? He hasn't done that yet in his time here. Ironically enough, this is the reason that he may still wind up with the Giants in the long-term, since teams may be afraid to invest in him long-term, giving the Giants an edge in negotiations with him and his agent Peter Schaffer (click HERE for a brief article with Nicks and Schaffer being mentioned).

The Giants have two guys who are absolute iron men on the team right now: Eli Manning on offense, and Antrel Rolle on defense. Short of having their legs amputated, neither of those two guys miss games. Rolle hasn't yet since he signed here in 2010, which is why I think he'll play in Dallas in 3 weeks on opening night despite his ankle sprain. If Nicks is to have a future past 2013 and 2014 with the Giants he MUST show that he can be more durable.

Projected 53-man roster on opening night: ROUND 4

Here are my last 3 attempts at predicting the Giants' opening night 53-man roster in Dallas on September 8th:

Here goes with attempt #4...

First, here are the positional breakdowns:

Now here are the players themselves:

All of this is a guesstimate based on what I've been reading from various online sources that I value (i.e., Training Camp reports from Patricia Traina, Paul Dottino, & radio interviews of Giants' front office personnel/coaching staff). I was going to originally make this my next to last guess at the 53-man roster, but I'm going to do an extra one since I'm having so much fun doing it a week from today (Thursday, August 22nd---the day after training camp breaks) before my final official guess of the 53-man roster on August 30th, the day after the Giants' 4th and final preseason game n New England. Final Cuts are to be announced by 6 pm New York time on Saturday, August 31st. Take a look at the 2013-2014 NFL Calendar below:

From the sound of the interview Joe & Evan of WFAN had with Giants' G.M. Jerry Reese, it sounds like they're going to take JPP off of the PUP List before the start of the regular season. They took Chris Snee and Terrell Thomas off of that list on August 6th. Right now, besides JPP, only two more players remain on the PUP List: DT Markus Kuhn and FB Henry Hynoski. My guess is that Hynoski & Kuhn remain on it to start the season, whereas JPP comes off of it in time to start the season, even if he's inactive for the first couple of games or so.

The Giants have two players who will start the season serving 4-game suspensions in WR Brandon Collins and Safety Will Hill. The Giants will have to make decisions regarding both Collins and Hill after week 4 of the regular season, one way or the other (to release them or to cut someone on the roster in order to give them a spot). Collins is a guy who is ideal for the Practice Squad. He is very likely to clear waivers if he's released after his suspension is done after week 4, and then be eligible to be signed to the Giants' Practice Squad after he clears waivers.

I'm guessing that Hill takes the place of Tyler Sash after he comes back after week 4 or week 5 The Giants can ask for a a one week roster exemption granting them an extra week to decide what to do, like they did last year with Sash after he opened the season serving a 4-game suspension. The thing about that is that Sash's contract is not guaranteed if he's on the opening day 53-man roster. The contracts of players with less than 4 years of accrued experience are not guaranteed salary cap-wise. Players who are likely to be released are players with less than 4 years worth of experience, like Sash (who has two) or Donnell (who has none).

Besides Will Hill and Brandon Collins, the Giants have one player on the Reserve/Retired List--FB Ryan D'Imperio. As Jason Fitzgerald explained to me via twitter, the team maintains his rights, but his salary comes off the books:

The other list that the Giants have players on is the Waived/Injured List. The Giants have 3 players placed on that list. They will all receive or have received Injury Settlements. They are CB Antonio Dennard, WR Kris Adams, and WR Jeremy Horne. Dennard has already received an Injury Settlement from the Giants. The other two are no doubt in the process of getting done. Injury Settlements count against the cap once the Top 51 Rule ceases on September 5th, 3 weeks from today.

Once Hynsoki comes off of the PUP List in week 7, I'm guessing that the Giants cut a WR (Barden), or possibly even a 4th TE like Larry Donnell who I wouldn't be shocked to see make the team at this point. The Giants' coaching staff has been talking him up a lot. As far as Kuhn is concerned, I think his fate and that of Marvin Austin are intertwined. If Austin shows nothing during his time on the active roster, and injuries aren't a factor---which is very likely to be wishful thinking since they almost always are---then I'd say Kuhn takes Austin's roster spot. Either that, or the Giants IR Kuhn, and save them both for next year, when a guy like Shaun Rogers will not likely be on the roster again since he's on a one-year Minimum Salary Benefit (MSB) deal.

Players who I'm giving the benefit of the doubt too who I placed on the roster as of now, but who are still skating on thin ice are DT Marvin Austin and CB Terrell Thomas. I wouldn't be surprised if they don't make it, but I think that, as of now, the Giants will give them a shot. Of course, injuries will make your decisions for you, but so far they haven't been a big problem at Giants' training camp (knock on wood). Other than Antrel Rolle's ankle scare--he should be ready for the regular season opener in Dallas on September 8th--the Giants have been rather fortunate in the injury department.

I wouldn't be shocked to see S Cooper Taylor (5th round pick out of Richmond) be placed on Injured Reserve. He's been on it for a spell now due to a sore hamstring. Victor Cruz spent the whole year on IR in 2012 for that very same reason. This is just a guess from me, but I wouldn't be surprised if that were the case here as well. We can only wait and see. Last year we saw the Giants stash Brandon Mosley on IR. Every year it happens with someone who has in injury that doesn't seem all that serious, but which ultimately eases their transition to that nebulous position on an NFL roster, giving a team a whole year to indoctrinate a player within it's "culture", so to speak, without risking losing him to another club.

I think that the Giants will find a RB on another team's roster after final cuts are made on Saturday, August 31st. RB Da'Rel Scott does NOT look long for this team. Other players, in my opinion, who seem like thy're going to get the axe as of now are:
  • RB Ryan Torain
  • QB Curtis Painter (in a manufactured backup QB competition w/David Carr)
  • Larry Donnell (even though good things have been said about him)
  • OG Eric Herman (he seems ticketed to the Practice Squad if he can clear waivers as a 7th round pick)
  • DE Adrian Tracy
  • DE Justin Trattou
  • DT Mike Patterson (this one has me torn because he can still play, but Austin's potential--as opposed to his actual production--seems to take precedence)
  • LB Kyle Bosworth (he's been a Special Teams demon so far from all reports)

My guess is that these 8 make the Practice Squad (assuming they're not claimed after being waived):

The Giants have made 3 roster moves since my last guess at the roster on July 30th. FB Ryan D'Imperio, WR Jeremy Horne, and WR Kris Adams are no longer on the 90-man roster from that time. Added to it in their place are WR Julian Talley, WR Marcus Harris, & FB Ben Guidugli. Let's see what happens between now, and a week from today when make my next 53-man roster projection. Hopefully, no injuries will occur that will force the Giants' hands with respect to how thy decide to shape their depth chart.

Here is the Giants' 90-man roster, & the corresponding 2013 salary cap numbers for each player

Here are the players in the Top 51 list:

*****

Here are players 52 through 90, who currently don't count against the salary cap at the moment (except for their 2013 prorations):

  • The players in light blue are Undrafted Rookie Free Agents (UDFAs) that were eligible to be drafted in this past April's draft.
    • Currently, the Giants have 5 on their roster (Clement, James, Mertile, Sabino, and Tweedy).
    • These 5 players are strong candidates to make it onto the Giants' practice squad if they don't make the opening day 53-man roster.
    • Their advantages are that they have low cap numbers, they're young, and they're cost controlled for 4 years (especially the first three).

The Giants have 3 players listed on the waived/injured list so far this training camp

They are as follows:

CB, Antonio Dennard (2013 cap # of $405,000waived off of Injured Reserve on July 27th)
WR, Jeremy Horne (2013 cap # of: $480,000 - waived/injured on August 1st)
WR, Kris Adams (2013 cap # of $405,000 - waived injured on August 12th)

Their replacements on the roster were as follows:

  • Dennard was the 91st player on the 90-man roster, therefore he didn't have a replacement for his roster spot (the Giants were allowed to carry him since he was injured; they've since reached an injury settlement with him)
  • Horne's replacement was WR Julian Talley (cap number of $405,000 - signed on August 1st).
  • Adams's replacement was WR Marcus Harris (cap number of $405,000 - signed on August 12th).

You can follow the transactions here:

*****

The Giants are going to reach injury settlements with Horne and Adams pretty soon. They've already done so, as indicated above, with Dennard. Those injury settlements will count against the salary cap once the Top 51 rule ceases 22 days from now, on at midnight NY time on Thursday, September 5th.

Here are some fine articles below in Injury Settlements. I suggest that people read up on them if people are interested in how the process works. It's something that happens every year to each of the 32 teams in the NFL, and counts against the cap once the regular season begins. I HIGHLY recommend the articles below:
